NTUC Childcare Co-operative Limited
NTUC Childcare Co-operative Limited started operations in 1977 with the social mission of helping more women rejoin the workforce. Since then, social trends have changed. Childcare is now more focused on supporting families in developing their preschool children. It also aims to support the industry in developing early childhood educators.

The NTUC Childcare Group, registered in 1992, comprises of:
  • NTUC Childcare, which offers more than 4,000 childcare places through its chain of 40 centres islandwide. Six of its centres also offer more than 80 places for infants.
  • The Little Skool-House International Private Limited, established in 1994 to provide premium childcare and preschool services to support working parents and workplaces in their efforts to help their employees to effectively manage their work and personal responsibilities and commitments.
  • The Regional Training and Resource Centre in Early Childhood Care and Education for Asia (RTRC Asia), a leader in the training and development of early childhood professionals in Singapore and in the region.

The Group has more than 700 staff and faculty members involved in the management and operations of its childcare centres and business units.

 

NTUC Choice Homes Co-operative Limited
NTUC Choice Homes Co-operative Limited was set-up in 1995 to help more Singaporeans meet their aspirations to own private property by delivering quality housing at fair and affordable prices.

Its projects are well spread over Singapore in various localities like Ang Mo Kio and Bishan in the north; Kovan and Sengkang in the northeast; Choa Chu Kang in the west and Tanah Merah and Simei in the east; near MRT stations and other amenities like schools, shops and eateries.

Since its inception, it has developed 11 projects including a freehold private condominium (Riviera Residences), four executive condominiums (Simei Green, Yew Mei Green, Bishan Loft and Park Green), and six private 99-year leasehold condominiums (Tropical Spring, Rivervale Crest, Grandeur 8, Kovan Melody, Yew Tee Residences and Casa Merah) with a total of 5,011 units.

 

NTUC Club
NTUC Club’s mission is to provide a comprehensive range of affordable and accessible lifestyle products to the Singapore Labour Movement and general public on sound commercial principles.

Established in 1987, it has continued to strive towards the provision of value-for-money lifestyle and leisure services, amenities and facilities for all. With its various facilities such as entertainment hub Downtown East, world-class Escape Theme Park, Singapore’s largest water theme park – Wild Wild Wet, The Spa @ Aranda, three resorts and four clubhouses, NTUC Club positions itself as a one-stop entity of enjoyment that provides workers with varied and affordable leisure choices so that they can have better work-life balance.

 

NTUC Eldercare Co-operative Limited
NTUC Eldercare Co-operative Limited was set up in 1997 to provide services to the ageing population. Eldercare aims to provide affordable and quality care services for the elderly of average dual-income Singaporean families, helping them to look after their elderly dependents while they are at work. It also generates awareness on challenges facing an ageing population. Since 1999, Eldercare has established four social day care centres for the elderly. They are located at Marsiling, Taman Jurong, Pasir Ris and Jurong Central. The centres provide holistic structured programmes and activities that cater to the physical, mental and social needs of the elderly. Physiotherapy and loans of home care equipment are among the few value-added services that they offer. Union members are able to enjoy a monthly rebate of $15.

New services available at its newly opened centre at Jurong Central include:

  • Care@home service, a range of non-medical services provided by a team of trained care staff in the home of the elderly.
  • Independent Living Showroom, which showcases ideas and assistive devices in making the environment safe and userfriendly to the elderly.

Eldercare hopes to see the ageing Singaporean population being adequately supported, cared for and loved by their families and the community.

 

NTUC Fairprice Co-operative Limited
Established since 1973, NTUC Fairprice Co-operative Limited has become Singapore’s leading supermarket retailer with a chain of more than 200 retail outlets spanning across the island.

Employer to about 5,000 workers, NTUC FairPrice has a current retail network of 202 outlets, comprising 76 FairPrice supermarkets, 1 FairPrice Xtra, 1 Liberty Market, 2 Homemarts, 12 FairPrice Xpress and 110 Cheers convenience stores.

The co-operative serves both the public and its 470,000 cooperative members who, through their support make it Singapore’s very own leading supermarket chain.

FairPrice’s founding mission was to help moderate the cost of living for low-income households in Singapore. Today, that social mission remains at the heart of its operations. Its many community projects are aimed at adding value to the well-being of the community it is involved in.

FairPrice also aims to provide its customers with the best value, quality products and excellent service, while serving the needs of its members, workers and the community, and fulfilling its role as a good corporate citizen.

FairPrice is also the first supermarket retailer in Singapore to have its own central warehousing and distribution company. It also builds and operates a 13,000-square-metre Fresh Food Distribution Centre. With these structural systems in place, FairPrice is able to achieve excellent inventory control and optimize procedural efficiency.

 

NTUC Foodfare Co-operative Limited
NTUC Foodfare Co-operative Limited was founded in 1995 with the mission to stabilize cooked food prices in Singapore. Today, Foodfare continues to fulfill this social role by keeping its prices for basic essential beverage and cooked food low and affordable.

During good times, Foodfare moderates price increase by setting benchmark prices. During tough times, it takes on the responsibility of helping workers tide over the difficulties by absorbing price hikes where necessary.

Foodfare’s social role in safeguarding the interests of the average Singaporean came to the fore when it dealt with the rising prices of the Coffee and Milo beverages in Singapore in March 2006. Foodfare has stayed true to its mission by absorbing the increased operational and raw material costs. Foodfare also decided not to raise the coffee prices and kept its Milo prices the same to help workers cope better.

As at December 2006, Foodfare operated eight outlets – three food courts, four coffee shops, and one food kiosk. It also caters food to nine army camps and operates a factory producing retail packed frozen bakery items and local delicacies, sauces and pastes in Senoko South Road.

 

NTUC Healthcare Co-operative Limited
Established in 1992, NTUC Healthcare Co-operative Limited’s mission is to help moderate the cost of healthcare in Singapore through promoting and providing quality healthcare products and services at affordable prices.

The co-operative operates 40 Unity pharmacies, 16 dental clinics, 10 medical clinics and 2 Traditional Chinese Medicine clinics. Its subsidiary companies, Origins Healthcare and NHC Health Resources, are distributors of organic food and rehabilitation products respectively.

2006 was an eventful year marked with two significant milestones and exemplified NTUC Healthcare’s continued dedication to provide cutting-edge healthcare services while maintaining affordability:

The launch of Medicare Family Clinic (Toa Payoh) in March, which houses medical, dental and TCM services, was in response to Singaporeans’ growing interest in exploring alternative treatments for their ailments, and to provide total-care convenience to patients.

In September, Unity’s first new concept store, “The Living Pharmacy”, was unveiled at Great World City. This newest addition, and Unity’s flagship store to-date, is designed as a one-stop family health store with a modern lifestyle interior and expanded product ranges. The store features health information panels and kiosk to inform and educate, an organic cafe, sound room for free hearing specialist consultation, and other services to enhance customers’ shopping experience. Riding on the success of the new concept store, there are plans to have five “The Living Pharmacy” stores throughout the island within the next few years.

 

NTUC Income Insurance Co-operative Limited
NTUC Income is the only insurance co-operative in Singapore. It is a national icon, built on strong and sound business principles. Established in 1970 in response to the growing needs for affordable insurance, it has become a leading life, health and general insurer, earning the trust of 1.8 million customers.

NTUC Income’s insurance plans benefit large numbers of Singaporeans from all strata of society, from the professionals and executives, to those with a more limited budget. It helps Singaporeans in difficult times by creating job opportunities and supports the community through financial contributions to charities and other worthy causes.

It has been rated “AA” by independent credit ratings agency, Standard & Poor’s since 1999, the highest accolades to be given to a domestic insurer in Asia, reflecting a strong financial profile, flexibility and capacity to meet new challenges.

The co-operative has a pioneering spirit. For example, it was the first insurer in Singapore to offer annuities in response to the Government’s calls to cater to the financial needs of an ageing population and the first to accept the invitation of the Ministry of Health to offer alternatives to the MediShield plans provided by CPF. As a national initiative, it was the first organization in Singapore to launch a car-sharing scheme.

 

NTUC LearningHub Private Limited
NTUC LearningHub Private Limited was corporatised in 2004 with a mission to enhance the lifelong employability of our workforce by providing high quality, innovative products and affordable learning. Since then, the organization has expanded to cater to the burgeoning training needs of the workforce and to keep pace with the changing facets of the economy.

To date, the centre has trained more than 300,000 executives and working adults, and has worked with more than 500 organizations to identify training needs, define curriculum roadmaps and deliver contemporary training programmes. Having amassed a wealth of industry experience, the centre is well positioned to provide high quality training programmes that are innovative, contemporary and affordable.

These programmes comprise of Infocomm Technology, Professional IT Certifications, Soft Skills & Literacy, Workplace Safety & Health, Employability Skills System and Security Skills.

Going forward, NTUC LearningHub aims to provide more diversified and holistic training programmes, as well as, the pioneering, development, setting up and management of various satellite training centres.

 

NTUC Link Private Limited
NTUC Link Private Limited’s mission is to maximise benefits and provide real value in the LinkPoints Loyalty and Rewards Programme. Incorporated in 1998, it aims to bring greater value and savings to members by having a stream of quality merchants offering LinkPoints and attractive rewards.

With more than 940,000 members and over 600 participating merchant outlets, LinkPoints Programme has grown to become one of the most popular loyalty programmes in Singapore. For the last three years, members earned a total of $33 million worth of LinkPoints. The programme continues to have the highest redemption rate in Singapore as well as strong and healthy response rate to the offers and promotions created.

The LinkPoints Programme continues to strengthen its benefits for members and in the year 2006 the LinkPoints website was ranked #1 in the Hitwise Singapore for the Rewards category industry based on number of visits.

Link has also increased its effort to create a wider range of benefits for union members within the LinkPoints Programme. One of the latest initiatives started is the LinkPoints Gold Dining Privileges that provides members offers and valued promotions at over 280 dining establishments island-wide.

In July 2006, Link developed the Mummy and Me affinity group to provide young parents especially mothers a platform to connect with other like-minded parents on their experiences through the various stages of parenthood.

 

NTUC Media Co-operative Limited
NTUC Media Co-operative Limited has evolved as the voice piece of the labour movement. The labour movement’s vision for a communication link with workers can be looked back to be as old as the National Trades Union Congress itself. The NTUC Secretary-General edited the first labour publication, “Perjuangan”. After a series of changes, NTUC Media was established in 1997 with a vision to fulfill NTUC’s vision to run a professional publications’management body.

The key social roles of NTUC Media are encompassed in two perspectives. It strives to promote an enhanced understanding of labour and current issues which encircle the labour movement. It also aims to be an excellent media provider, offering a range of more effective products and services to reach target markets of its clients at affordable rates with value-add services.

This social mission is achieved with its current vehicles, NTUC This Week and Lifestyle. In addition, NTUC Media’s management and staff have been actively engaged in increasing and improving the quality of activities that support its co-operatives’ social mission. The genuine support of various members of the NTUC Family – unions, co-operatives, associations and affiliated companies – has laid paths for these efforts.

To refocus its energy in publications and events, NTUC Media confined its stake in a joint venture, Unionworks Private Limited, that operates two radio stations –Radio 91.3 and Radio 100.3. NTUC Media now owns 20 per cent of Unionworks, down from 50 per cent. NTUC Media also carries out ad-hoc publishing and events management.

 

NTUC Thrift & Loan Co-operative Limited
NTUC Thrift & Loan Co-operative Limited was formed in 1998 with the primary mission to inculcate the good habit of thrift and grow the cash assets of its members. Besides paying higher interest rates on savings and fixed deposits and charging less for loans, NTUC Thrift also seeks to give better returns with higher dividend payout for subscription capital investments. Dividend payouts are tied to overall profit performance of the co-operative.

Through the En-bloc Savings scheme, NTUC Thrift encourages union members from unionized companies as a group to commit to a regular monthly savings plan. The scheme aims to help them save up for rainy days or emergencies. In 2006, Thrift launched the Retrenched Workers Fixed Deposit scheme to help retrenched union members get better returns on their retrenchment payouts.

Since 1998, NTUC Thrift has been steadfastly growing from strength to strength. As at end-2006, membership enrolment exceeded well over 63,000 with total assets under management totaling more than $306 million. Membership is open to all members of NTUC affiliated unions and co-operatives
