Growing old is a difficult process socially, psychologically and physically. Each person copes with age-related changes differently.
Singapore’s population is indeed ageing rapidly. Currently, there are approximately 235,000 elderly, aged 65 and above, translating to 7.0% of the population. This is expected to increase to 800,000, or almost 20% of the population by the year 2030. It is estimated that over 8.0% will need help in daily living. ( Singapore – Health Technologies: Geriatric Healthcare Services)
Old age is unfortunately often a time of loss. The potential losses are very varied but are often interrelated, and those that accompany old age are of:
- Health due to increasing pathology
- Wealth due to termination of employment
- Companionship following bereavement
- Independence due to acquired disabilities
- Homeostasis due to impairments to autonomic nervous system and renal function
- Status following retirement and loss of independence
Care of the elderly will become critical as Singapore’s society ages over the next thirty years. By the year 2030, one in five Singaporeans will be at least 65 years old. The current health status of Singaporeans is good with a life expectancy at birth of 78 years, which is comparable to citizens of more developed countries.
Therefore there is a pressing need for Singaporeans to understand the ageing population better in order to provide the necessary care for them. The certificate III in Aged Care Work will teach you that – the physcology of the elderly , how to communicate with them, how to take care of them physically, etc. The Course will have practical components where there are mock-up care facilities in CSM Academy for you to practice and nearing the end of the course, you get to have attachments in a Nursing Home to do the actual work.

Who will benefit from this course?
The Certificate III in Aged Care work course prepares students to be Aged Care Giver/Workers primarily in residential facilities under direct or regular supervision with clearly defined organizational guidelines and service plans. The students carry out activities related to the maintenance of an individual’s personal care and/or other activities of living. Presently, Nursing Homes in Singapore has abundant job vacancies in this area.
Students will not only learn to look after elderly patients in nursing homes but are also able to use the experience and knowledge they have learned to look after their own loved ones who are frail and sick at home.
